Thank You!

Friends,

We began this journey eight months ago in front of the Skidmore Fountain, celebrating its quote about citizenship. The journey ended for me last night, at least for now, but I’m elated by what we have accomplished:

• We gathered 1145 qualifying contributions, more than any other campaign in this race.

• We promised to make this campaign an example of what Voter Owned Elections can bring to Portland’s elections, and we succeeded with a great campaign, including FIVE VOE candidates — and the winner of the runoff will be the first non-incumbent Commissioner elected with a VOE campaign!

• I had the opportunity to meet hundreds, probably thousands of citizens of Portland and learn from them about an incredible array of issues.

• We’ve impressed upon the other candidates the importance of the themes we articulated: the necessity of Portland leading the nation in creating a model for sustainable cities and the opportunities it will bring to us; and the vital need to engage all parts of our community to make Portland the city it can be.

This journey would not have been possible without your support. I am deeply grateful for all the volunteer hours, $5 contributions and the kind words I have received during the last eight months. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

I don’t know yet what’s next for me, but you can be sure that I’ll keep working to make Portland even more extraordinary…

Chris

Come Celebrate!

in

After nine months on the campaign trail, we're getting ready to party!

Come join us starting at 7:30pm on Tuesday at Cafe Reese, 1037 NW 23rd Ave (at Marshall St.).

Under Voter Owned Elections, campaigns are prohibited from spending public funds on election night parties. So I’ll provide soft drinks myself, and we’ll encourage you to purchase coffee drinks, wine and delicious food from Glenn Brugman and his staff at Café Reese, a neighborhood small business.

See you Tuesday!

Surviving Candidates Gone Wild

Our campaign's "strategic objective" for Candidates Gone Wild was to "not disgrace ourselves" (I suspect many of the campaigns had the same goal).

Mission accomplished :-)

A Great (Platinum) Day for Portland

Today the League of American Wheelman awarded Portland the coveted Platinum Bicycle City status. We are only the second U.S. city and the first major metro area to receive this award. This is tremendous recognition of the work so many of us have done toward making Portland the leading cycling city in the country.

Now it's time to shift our goals toward becoming one of the best cycling cities in the world!

Get all the details on our Platinum award at BikePortland.org

Quotes about Chris:

"Chris knows transportation and land use. He has the experience to plan for 300,000 new residents in Portland over the next 20 years while maintaining our city's character and livability." -- Michael Powell, Owner, Powell's Books

"Only Chris Smith has the public service record to back up what he says he'll do. If he can accomplish this much as a volunteer, just imagine what he'll do as a city Commissioner." -- Rick Michaelson, former Planning Commissioner

"Chris has been a champion of openness and transparency in government. If you want someone who can make government more accountable, elect someone who has actually done it." -- Norma Paulus, former Secretary of State

A Renewed Urban Renewal Policy for Portland

Widen the Scope and Benefits of Urban Renewal Spending

I believe that the usefulness of the current practice of focus all urban renewal spending only in specific districts is obsolete. Thankfully, the City no longer has whole urban districts that are ‘blighted’, but we certainly have needs for investment all over the City.

Therefore, we should now reinvest in much needed infrastructure – parks, schools and roads all over the city and not just in the 15% of the City that today can legally be included in urban renewal districts.

Blogtown, PDX: Meet the Contenders - Question #14

Blogtown, PDX "Meet the Contenders"

The Portland Mercury's Blogtown, PDX site has been producing a weekly series of questions for the various candidates running in the Portland mayor and city council races. This series is a great way to meet the candidates and learn about the issues affecting the public and Portland city government. We're reproducing (with permission) Chris's responses here, while also providing links to the original Blogtown posts.

Question #14:

(Original Post from Mar. 20, 2008)

Our region is poised to consider what to do about the Columbia River Crossing—and we’re faced with an option that costs roughly $4.2 billion dollars, and possibly doubles the size of the bridge over the Columbia River. In your opinion, does the staff-recommended option—a 10 to 12 lane bridge, plus light rail transit, tolls, and improved pedestrian and bike crossing—meet Portland’s goals and needs? What would you advocate for as the optimal plan for the crossing, and how would you ensure that Portland’s needs and goals aren’t lost in a massive regional, bi-state project?

Question #13:

(Original Post from Mar. 13, 2008)

The last candidate who turned in more than 1,000 signatures has been certified for public financing. What are your thoughts on the program? Why did you or didn’t you participate? Also, would you vote to put the program to a public vote in 2010?
